The popular Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Femi Falana SAN, has spoken on the issue of security challenges in the country and IPOB's Eastern Security Network.

During an interview with Chief Dele Momodu, Femi Falana responded to the questions asked about his views on the issue of self-defense and the institution of Eastern Security Network. Whereby, he answered that by virtue of Section 33 of the Nigerian Constitution, right to life of every Nigerian is guaranteed. "And it is also there that, it won't be said to be an offence under the law if you use reasonable force to deal with anybody who wants to take your life, or your property." - Falana stated.

Falana further stated that both the penal code and criminal code of the Nigerian law recognise the right to self-defense. And with respect to the Eastern Security Network, Falana said he commended the initiative just like he did with the western region's Amotekun Security Initiative.

"Abuja can no longer ask state governments not to defend their people since the police can't cope with respect to maintaining internal security in the country." - Fanala noted.

Meanwhile, Dele Momodu reminded Falana that ESN is a private security initiative, and not owned by the government. Then, Falana replied, "once the government has shown incompetence in defending its people, once the government has shown it is insensitive to the yawning and aspirations of Nigerians, it is going to be extremely difficult to outlaw private initiatives meant to defend the people."

Fanala said he has repeatedly made the point that the government has a urge to engage IPOB and other aggrieved parties in Nigeria. "Because, if you are negotiating with bandits, it is illogical and irresponsible not to engage other forces in the country that have embraced arms in solving the crisis confronting the country." Femi Falana concluded.
