The Saps in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, are investigating a culpable homicide incident following the deaths of three suspected illicit cigarettes smugglers on Wednesday night, 24 June, at about 23:00.
The Limpopo provincial police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the police were notified by other motorists about a vehicle which overturned along the public road at Gondeni village outside Thohoyandou.
"Upon arrival at the scene, a wrecked silver Mercedes Benz sedan with four unknown occupants were found," said Mojapelo.
He said members of Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and on arrival, two males were declared dead. The other two persons were taken to the local hospital for medical treatment but one of them passed on upon arrival. The sole survivor of the accident was admitted in a very critical condition.
He said further investigation of the scene led the police to discover multiple packets of illicit cigarettes inside the vehicle.
"Investigations into the identity of the deceased and the injured person as well as the presence of illicit cigarettes in their vehicle have already begun," concluded Mojapelo.
