Ten Hag’s Ex-Player Agrees Terms To Join Man United
Manchester United have been linked with virtually every eligible player this transfer season. Of course, with the Red Devils, this is often the case and Erik ten Hag’s appetite for a rebuild makes it more likely to be true than not.
Despite all that, the Premier League giants only have one confirmed arrival to brag about headed into pre-season and a whole list of individuals still struck in the seemingly eternal limbo of contract negotiations.
In the midst of these, one may begin to show a glimmer of hope for the United faithful at last.
According to an exclusive by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have agreed on personal terms with Lisandro Martinez. This is a big update given that the side has been linked to the Argentine centre-back for a while now, exciting a good chunk of the fan base.
The need to sign an adequate centre-back became more than apparent last campaign when United’s leaky backline was the woe of their goal difference and miserable performances in the Premier League.
As such, the tactically outlier stature of the 24-year-old makes him an incredibly promising figure.
As per Romano, executives of the club were present in Amsterdam to “seal the deal” for the player. Interestingly, Ajax had rejected a €50 million bid including add-ons just last week. However, the club is now understood to be open to the sale and thus ready for business.
Given this development, it will be interesting to see how much higher that price-tag creeps before the transfer becomes official. United famously broke the bank for Harry Maguire in the past in a deal which was later criticized heavily as Leicester City had given the impression of bullying the financially superior giants into shelling out an inflated transfer fee.
Liverpool make contact to sign Sporting midfielder
Liverpool have enquired about Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes, according to Jornal de Noticias via Paisley Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo). The Reds have contacted the Portuguese club over a potential move for the 23-year-old.
Other clubs in the Premier League interested in the Portugal international’s services are Chelsea and Wolves. But Sporting are said to be unwilling to sell their young midfielder as they’ve already parted ways with Joao Palhinha this summer.
Nunes’ contract keeps him with the Portuguese side until 2026. A release clause of £50.6 million has been inserted in his current deal. But Sporting seemingly would be willing to negotiate a little on the price.
Being in and around the Portuguese side’s first team since 2020, the 23-year-old has established himself at the José Alvalade Stadium. In his two years at the club, the Portugal international has played 99 times for the Lisbon-based side.
Currently, Liverpool’s midfield has several options. Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are the three most prominent members in the middle of the park.
Naby Keita also managed to carve a place for himself in the first XI at times last season. The Guinean played an important role in the side, providing more attacking impetus through the middle.
Curtis Jones has established himself in the squad since his debut in 2019. The young Scouser has featured in 74 games for the first team in his time at the Merseyside club. The 21-year-old has proven himself whenever he’s called upon.
Harvey Elliott is another prospect in the side who Jurgen Klopp has preferred to deploy in the middle of the park. The youngster featured heavily at the start of the last campaign before an ankle injury sidelined him.
The Reds are ready to go into next season with more or less the same names in midfield as last year. Having an extra body wouldn’t hurt. But fans will feel Nunes isn’t the high-profile signing who’ll necessarily have the impact required to win titles.
