Who Were Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego?
So when I learned about three Hebrew boys who were brave enough to walk into a fiery furnace rather than worship a false god, I was awed. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were instant heroes. After researching them to write Of Fire and Lions, I admired them even more.
Let’s take a look FIRST at what I use as the foundation for every story—God’s Truth. What does the Bible tell us about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego?
The story of Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego from the Bible book of Daniel 6 tells us of three Jewish boys who refused to bow down to the King of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar.
The three men grew wise and respected as high appointed officials in Babylon. Other Babylonian officials who were jealous of the Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego were able to get King Nebuchadnezzar to command that all people bow down to a golden statue. When the three men refused to bow down and worship the idol and god of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar had them thrown into the fiery furnace which was heated seven times hotter than normal.
Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego had faith that God would save them. When King Nebuchadnezzar looked into the fire he saw four men walking around in the furnace unharmed - Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego, and the Son of God. King Nebuchadnezzar brought the young men out of the flames, promoted them to a higher office, and decreed that the God of Israel be worshipped.

What can we learn from these Hebrew boys—giants of the faith—who then disappeared into a foreign culture to serve silently for the rest of their lives?
Throughout this study I saw God’s constant presence. When these boys were taken from Jerusalem, they’d likely been taught that Yahweh dwelt in Solomon’s Temple behind a curtain atop the golden Ark.
Imagine their surprise—and immense relief—to realize He had followed them to Babylon! Where is it you need God to follow you today? I’ve got wonderful news: He’s already there waiting and will walk with you on the journey.
But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you” (Isaiah 43:1-2).
"O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." (Daniel 3:16-18, ESV)
