The quarter final of Euro 2020 began with Belgium facing Italy. This was the most competitive fixture in this competition with each side having star players. The Belgium side entered into the match with high confidence with Italy being doubted after their performance against Austria in the last 16 extra time win. Everyone expected Belgium to give their best in the game unlike Italy.
The Belgium coach, Roberto Martinez, started the first 11 players with three defenders who were Toby Alderweireld, Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen. This defence seemed to be not stable and also keeping in mind that they are slow defenders when it comes to speed during counter attack. The positioning of the three defenders led to many mistakes making Belgium to concede the two goals.Like in the picture above, Thomas Vermaelen is seen not focusing and positioning himself towards the ball paving way to the first goal of Italy. The other defender is seen allowing the player to dribble past him while raising his hands up. The coach should have employed four defenders with different qualities like Dedryck Boyata and Jason Denayer. This could have stopped the lethal forward of Italy.
Congratulations to Italy as they look forward to face Spain in the semi-finals.
