International Day of the Girl Child is an international 'observance' day declared by the United Nations.

It is also called the Day of Girls or the International Day of the Girl.

According to information gathered from Wikipedia, it was first celebrated on the 11th October, 2012.

The observation supports more opportunities for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender.

This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, protection from discrimination, and violence against women and forced child marriages.

The celebration of the day also reflects the successful emergence of girls and young women as a distinct cohort in development policy, programming, campaigning and research.

In Ghana, the protection of the girl child welfare which includes social development, duties and responsibilities has evolved significantly.

From the days when girls were relegated to the kitchen, to the modern day Ghana, where the girl child has the opportunity to start exploiting their career even at a tender age, it is enough to say that Ghana is paving way for the then vulnerable girl child.
