Son Heung-min's brilliant second-half goal earned Nuno Espirito Santo victory in his first Premier League match as Tottenham Hotspur manager, defeating champions Manchester City 1-0 at home. The victory also ended Pep Guardiola's perfect opening weekend record, having won his first five games of the season at Manchester City.
Though Tottenham managed to win without Harry Kane on Sunday, Son Heung-min still emphasised the captain's huge importance as rumours of a move to City continue to swirl.
The champions dominated possession in the first half but couldn't find a breakthrough as Fernandinho and Riyad Mahrez blew their best chances. The Spurs carried their threat at halftime and took the lead 10 minutes after the restart through Son, who huddled superbly in the lower left corner after Steven Bergwijn had created the opening.
Bergwijn also had a great chance to double the lead moments later, but put his effort above him. Man City pushed for an equalizer to no avail, with Ferran Torres and summer signing Jack Grealish making his full debut, each turned down by Hugo Lloris.
