The kenya Airports Authority has began the upgrade of Angama airstrip in Maasai mara,Narok county into a full able airport in efforts to boost the economy and promote tourism in the country..The project will be executed in 3 phases and will first involve rehabilitation of the 1260 Metres long runway then expanding the width of the airstrip from 18metres to 23metres and finally constructing a new Apron and a new fence.
The KAA stated that the upgrades are aimed at enabling the airport handle huge and heavier aeroplanes-code C aircraft- after attaining standards of international airports.The airport will become the newest international airport after the Jomo kenyatta international airport,Moi international airport in Mombasa,Eldoret international airport and Kisumu international airport respectively.
44.7hectares of land will be acquired within Maasai Mara Natioal reserve for the upgrade of the Angama airstrip."Today marks a major milestone in partnership between tourism and the aviation industry in line with the governments approach to foster development across the country," said transport PS Solomon Kitungu.In 2018,KAA allocated 691 million shillings meant to upgrade 6 airstips across the country located in different counties with the aim of boosting connectivity within the country.
