2023 Presidency: 3 Reasons Why The Recent Decision of a PDP Committee Could Favour Peter Obi

News Hub Creator

The rising agitation from Southerners for the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to the region is no longer a secret to the public. It should be recalled that for a while now, the region has been at loggerheads with the North over the issue of zoning of the 2023 Presidency. Arguably, despite the heated debate, the final decision can only be made by political parties. This explains why what happens within the dominant parties is important to millions of Nigerians.

Within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Cable has revealed that the Zoning Committee setup by the party, has recommended a Northern Chairman for the party. By its implication, the party’s presidential candidate would be nominated from the Southern region. There is no doubt that many bigwigs of the party from the South have their eyes set on the 2023 presidential ticket.

Arguably, the likes of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and some other members of the PDP from the Southern region, are likely to deploy whatever political strategies they have in their arsenal, to secure the party’s nomination. However, for the following 3 reasons, the recent decision of the PDP Zoning Committee, could favour Peter Obi.

1. His acceptance by people from other regions

It can be argued that the first quality the PDP could likely consider while nominating its flag-bearer, is how people from other regions would accept the person. This can be said to be one area that Peter Obi has an edge over many others. The former Governor of Anambra state undoubtedly enjoys overwhelming acceptance from other regions, particularly after his last outing as the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP for the 2019 presidential election.

2. His brilliant performance during the Vice Presidential debate ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

There is no doubt that many people that watched the Vice Presidential debate between Peter Obi, and Professor Yemi Osinbajo, ahead of the 2019 election, are still full of admiration for the former Governor’s brilliance. This can be argued to have made him a more marketable name for the PDP. As such, one should not be surprised if the party picks him ahead of others to fly its flag at the 2023 presidential election.

3. His records as a Governor of Anambra State

Apart from the two points discussed above, Peter Obi’s performance as the Governor of Anambra state speaks volumes for him. It should be recalled that during his administration, the state recorded tremendous development following his introduction of Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS). This can be argued to have won him the hearts of many Nigerians.

Arguably, the PDP would likely access their chances with each of the candidates coming out for its primaries. In my view, the three reasons given above, could see the recent decision of the PDP Zoning Committee, favour Peter Obi, and equally see him emerge as the party’s flag-bearer in 2023.
