The Biggest Stone Church in West Africa is located in Ghana

Built in the 1930s largely by local artisans under the supervision of European Missionaries, the St. Theresa's Minor Basilica is believed to be the largest stone structure in the whole of West Africa.

It is one of the 4 Basilicas in Ghana and one of 23 Basilicas in the whole of Africa. It can take up to about 3, 000 people when it is filled to capacity. The first time it underwent a major rehabilitation was in the late 90s and most of the mahogany woods that were initially used to roof it when it was first built had to be used again because they were still in good condition.

The St. Theresa's Minor Basilica is one of the few tourists attractions in the Nandom Municipality. It is strategically located in the centre of the Nandom town on a hill partly exposed to passers-by but surrounded by trees including mahogany, nim, and mangoes among others. Indeed, Nandom has a predominantly Roman Catholic population (about 80%), many of whom worship in this historical monument on special occasions.

What is a Basilica?

A basilica is simply an important church building designated by the Pope (Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome) because it carries special spiritual, historical, and/or architectural significance. It is said that once a church of the Roman Catholic is named a basilica, it cannot lose its basilica status.

The following are the three other Basilicas one can find in Ghana;

St Joseph's Minor Basilica at Elmina in the Central Region.

St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Basilica of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows at Navrongo in the Upper East Region.
