There are many tongue-speaking Christians whose consciences are dead. They sin anyhow, and after that enter the church and blast in tongues as if the whole gift was poured upon them. I doubt if such tongues are from the sweet Holy Spirit. That might be a product of the mind or demons. Speaking in tongues is not a yardstick to determine the presence of the Holy Spirit in a Christian since it can be faked. I have found out some key signs that determines the presence of the holy spirit in a believer; that’s what I will share with you now.

1. A living conscience: A Christian who has the holy spirit dwelling in him/her has a living conscience. Such a person will not be able to commit sin and go away without being convicted by the Holy Spirit. I have seen many young Christians who claim they have the Holy Ghost committing sins and going away as if nothing happened.

A Christian who has a dead conscience doesn’t have Him. The Holy Spirit detests sin so also will a man who carry Him. You will never love sin if you have him. This is why the bible says we shouldn’t grieve the Holy Spirit.
2. Boldness to preach the gospel of Christ is another key sign you will note in a Christian who has the Holy Spirit. We have seen the Bible emphasize it in the book of Acts of the Apostles chapters two and four. Some may claim to have the holy ghost, yet, they are ashamed to preach the word to unbelievers. This is not according to the teaching of the bible. If you have the boldness to spread the good news, then, it’s a strong sign that you have Him dwelling in you.

3. Supernatural leading is a sign that you have him. Romans 8:14 says, “as many as are led by the spirit of God are sons of God.” A Christian that has the holy spirit will experience divine leading. If all about your life is what you want and what you don’t want, you may be living by the desires of the flesh and not according to the spirit. A spiritual man is led by the spirit.

In conclusion, speaking in tongues is abused these days. Using it as a sign to confirm the presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer can make us believe what is fake. We must rely on the fruits to identify if we have Him or not because Jesus said, “By their fruits, you shall know them.” You can’t have him and lack character. May God keeps helping us; amen.
