Meet Amina J Mohammed, a Nigerian working for the United Nations. She shares the name with Kenya's Minister for Sports, Heritage, and Culture, Amb. Amina C Mohammed. Amina is credited for fighting for the rights of women in Nigeria. Although she was also a victim, she has risen through ranks to give hope to her fellow women that nothing is impossible.
Amina is the current Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations as well as the Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group. She is the first woman of color to hold such a high executive position in the United Nations. Before this appointment, she served as Minister of Environment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She steered Nigeria's efforts on climate action and the protection of the natural environment.
The two women of substance were coincidently born in the same year, 1961. Apart from having the same names and sharing their religion, both have served in the same organization, United Nations. Though under different capacities, both of them have served as deputy Secretary Generals. In their respective governments, they have both served in ministerial positions.
