The Agbajowo Advocacy for Yoruba People's Rights, or AAYPR, a Pan Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has condemned calls for the nation to be divided and the Yoruba people to secede from Nigeria. Activists such as Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, and Prof Banji Akitoye have advocated for Yoruba secession from Nigeria.
The group announced this in a communique released after its monthly meeting on Sunday in Ado Ekiti. The group cautioned that dividing the country will complicate issues in a communique jointly signed by its National President and Director of Media and Publicity, Otunba Muyideen Olamoyegun and Oluwasola Ibukun, respectively.
It urged Nigerians not to be disturbed by some Yoruba Elders' call for a breakaway, noting that no general assembly of Yoruba leaders has met to negotiate breaking away from the existing Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Instead of disintegration, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural community proposed insisting on the need to restructure the nation in all of its implications.
