We aren't in normal times seems we are battling to eradicate Covid-19 cases in the country, but doesn't prevent our leaders from implementing certain project that will make life a bit comfortable for the citizens.
Currently as we speak many businesses are at the verge of collapsing, especially those who use electricity for their daily activities, coldstore operators, hairdressers, barbering shops and many individual who use electrical gadgets at home are all crying due to 'dumsor'.
The term 'dumsor' is an Akan pronunciation 'dum sɔ' which literally means 'off and on', the persistent, irregular, and unpredictable electric power outage, which gained Wikipedia recognition somewhere in 2015 under leadership of the former president John Dramani Mahama, after Ghanaian generating capacity was 400-600 megawatts, less than what Ghana needed.
This affected so many businesses in the country way back, where some celebrities added their voices, while others matched principal the street of Accra, demonstrated against the then government. The NPP labeled Mahama administration as incompetent with bad governance, which contributed to the woeful defeat of NDC in 2016 general elections.
Five years down the line, same problem is here with us, power distribution companies, the like of ECG and GRIDCO are 'crying'. Nobody expect this current administration to commit the mistakes that were made by their predecessors.
I personally bleed inside when opinion leaders refuse to face the facts and are giving different definition to 'dumsor'.
Can you imagine that 15% of our population have never feel electricity in this era of modernisation. Interestingly, we are made to believe that, there's is excess power stored for the country, if so why then this persistent, irregular, and unpredictable electric power outages?
I got the chance listening to the founder and the leader of the United Front Party (UFP), Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike this morning on Kumasi based Nyhira 104.5 FM making good submissions on the issue of dumsor, where he indicated that, Electricity Company of Ghana is a limited liability Company which is suppose to work and make profit, but ECG is fully owned by the Government.
According to him, before Ghanaians can be liberated from these challenges, the monopoly should be off. ECG should totally be handled by private companies, unlike the telecommunications company where MTN and others are operating freely.
He ironically kept on record that, seems Nana Akufo-Addo leads administration doesn't want to accept dumsor, he perfectly agrees on condition that, it's an intellectual property of the former president John Dramani Mahama and nobody can take it from him. He said the current situation is call "Sordum" meaning 'on and off'.
