Telecommunication Engineering is a relatively new academic field in Nigeria. Basically, it involves the application of electrical and computer engineering principles to sort out issues in telecommunications.
For individuals that are interested in obtaining a degree in this program, there are Nigerian universities offering the course. According to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), only 9 universities are currently offering the course. Only four of the universities (Ahmadu Bello University; Air Force Institute of Technology, Bayero University and Federal University of Technology, Minna) are owned by the government while the rest are privately owned. If University of Ilorin (which runs the program as Telecommunication Science is included, the number of institution running the course will become 10.
Some Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) have also got the approval of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to award NID the program. Nine of these IEIs are owned by federal and state governments. Digital Bridge Institute, Model Skills Training Centre and International Vocational Technical Entrepreneurship Centre are among the public IEIs running the course.
For a candidate to be eligible for admission, he must have five ordinary level credits that include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science subject. The must also have high score in UTME.
According to the NID curriculum of the program, students of Telecommunication Technology in the IEIs will be trained in Electronics, Digital Communications, Satellite Communications, Fibre Optics Communications, Data Communications and Mobile Communication systems.
Interestingly, graduates of the course are in high demand. They can easily work as electrical engineers, computer scientists and telecommunication specialists. Their services are needed by mobile phone service providers, airlines, internet service providers, FINTECH as well as aerospace and satellite television companies. It is therefore worthwhile for admission seekers to pursue a degree in this discipline.
