Kaizer Chiefs appear to have made a definitive choice on Sibusiso Vilakazi, whose Mamelodi Sundowns contract is scheduled to expire.
VILAKAZI'S DEAL AT SUNDOWNS TO EXPIRE
When his contract with Sundowns expires at the conclusion of the season, the former Bafana Bafana international will be a free agent. There have been no significant signs that the Brazilians intend to extend Vilakazi's contract, prompting the revival of rumors tying him to the Chiefs.
Amakhosi is notorious for recruiting free agents and has a history of signing older Sundowns players, adding fuel to the flames. Jose Torealba, Leonardo Castro, and Khama Billiat, to mention a few, are examples of these transfers.
After leaving the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2012, Vilakazi was a big target for Chiefs, with an overseas move being discussed at the time. When that did not materialize, he was instead signed by Sundowns in what was thought to be a major money move. Although he demonstrated his ability early on, his career with Ka bo Yellow was marred by injury.
Now that they're looking to add even more firepower to their squad for another run at the CAF Champions League next season, it appears that the older and fringe players will be the ones to make way. Unfortunately for 'Vila,' he appears to fall into that category.
AT CHIEFS, NO VILA
It appears, however, that Chiefs fans who hoped to see Vilakazi in a Chiefs jersey next season will be disappointed. This is due to a Twitter conversation in which the club's sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr appeared to confirm that Amakhosi will not be pursuing the player.Club fan 'Sheikh Bilal' tweeted "There is no need for Sbu Vilakazi" before taking the club's official twitter account as well as that of Motaung Junior.
Another observant follower noticed that Kaizer Jnr had reposted the original tweet and took it as a sign of support for the message.
Another fan then inquired as to whether the retweet was an endorsement, to which Kaizer Jnr's response of "100%" seemed to confirm that he was approving the post. That appears to be the end of the Chiefs-Vilakazi transfer controversy. Take a peek at the discussion below and make your own decision.
