One wonders why Mr. Olusegun Mimiko has yet to return to his former political party after he lost to Senator Akinyelure in the senatorial district election in 2019. Mimiko contested for a seat in the House of Senate on the platform of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) which he formed.
Since the election had been won and lost, there have been lots of insinuations from different quarters that Mr. Olusegun Mimiko will join either the PDP or the APC. Even there are arguments that he will possibly consider the People's Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the All Progresives Congress (APC) because of his relationship with several members of the party.
But from another point of view, Mr. Olusegun Mimiko may not want to return to the PDP considering some factors that are currently seen in the Ondo State politics.
Mr. Olusegun Mimiko may prefer to work for Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu. There have never been any form of acrimony between Mr. Akeredolu and his predecessor in office, Mimiko. Normally, every new governor will want to investigate the outgoing one's government and financial dealings. But Akeredolu has never moved against Mimiko.
Another point is that initially Mimiko was hesitant because he thought Akeredolu and Agboola Ajayi would run together on the same All Progresives Congress platform. Now, Agboola Ajayi has left the APC for the PDP.
Then, a question will be what is Mimiko waiting for? Yes, he may not decide now to join the APC and Akeredolu because the All Progresives Congress has yet to give the ticket to Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu to run for another term in office.
It will be risky for Mr. Olusegun Mimiko to join the APC without an assurance that his targets will be met.
Then, why has he yet to join the PDP?
Mr. Mimiko understands Ondo politics better.
In the People's Democratic Party in Ondo State there are two main candidates struggling for the party ticket. Mr. Eyitayo Jegede and Mr. Agboola Ajayi.
Truly, Mr. Olusegun Mimiko will favour Eyitayo Jegede because of the cordial relationship between them. In 2016 Mr. Mimiko staunchly backed and rigorously campaigned for the PDP candidate Eyitayo Jegede though some party members claimed that Jegede was imposed on them. Nevertheless, Mimiko didn't flinch in his support for Jegede.
Jegede lost the election to Rotimi Akeredolu and the APC. But now he is seeking another opportunity. If it is certain that the PDP will give the ticket to Jegede, Mimiko would have defected from the ZLP to the PDP.
