Timber development division clamps down activities of illegal sawmill operators


The office of the Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD), Sunyani, in collaboration with the Dormaa Forestry Division have clamped down on illegal sawmill operators at Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region. 

A team comprising the Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD), Forestry Commission, Police and Military have raided the premises of illegal sawmill operators at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West district of the Bono region.

The sawmills were operating without valid permits from the Forestry Commission. 

The team’s arrival at the premises of the illegal sawmill operators saw the places vacant with no workers on duty. The situation however compelled them to seize some of their items, which included machines and lumbers thus, enforcing LI 22(54). 

The seizure was an attempt to force the victims right the wrongs to curb the illegalities in the timber industry, especially in the Dormaa Forest Reserves.

The Sunyani Area manager of the Timber Industry Development Division (TIDD), Abban Kofi Bonsu, asserted his outfit would ensure that all operations of illegal sawmills are curbed.

The District manager of the Dormaa Forest District, Ebenezer Mensah, lamented low staff strength is impeding the effective running of their administration.

A victim of the raid, Abdela Yakubu, called for support to enable them do the needful to operate legally to avert further occurrences.
