The Punch Newspaper has reported the return of the former Cross Rivers State governor Mr Donald Duke to the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The former governor has confirmed that he has registered with the party and he has become a full member of the party once again.

Recall that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) brought Duke to limelight when he was presented as the governorship candidate of the party in 1999 following the country's departure from military regime to the democratic system. And the party allowed him to contest again in 2003 for another term. In a nutshell, Mr. Duke spent eight years as Cross Rivers State governor.

But Duke parted ways with the PDP because of his presidential ambition. He wanted to rule the country, hence he found his way out of the party in order to actualise the ambition. He joined the Social Democratic Party which couldn't make him win Cross Rivers State let alone the country. He lost the presidential election.

Now that he has returned to the PDP, there are certain lessons that Nigerians should learn. First and foremost, they need to know that Cross Rivers State will always belong to the PDP irrespective of what happens in other parts of the country. It's relatively impossible for any other party to claim the state.

Almost a week ago, Ben Ayade stunned political analysts when he decided to dump the PDP for the APC. It was less imaginable because he could be considered as one of the few politicians who have greatly benefitted from the PDP.

After his indoor meeting with the APC governors including Mai Mala Buni, Abubakar Bagudu, Kayode Fayemi, Ben Ayade declared that he would be decamping to the All Progresives Congress. It looked like the future is bad for the PDP. Governors hold much power when it comes to politics in their state.

Now that Donald Duke has decided to be identified again with the PDP, the party can still be hopeful of a better future. Donald Duke, who has had some national popularity, will help to rejig and resuscitate the PDP in Cross Rivers State.

The second lesson to learn is that no matter what happens, real PDP members and politicians will definitely return to the party. Though they may have things with other political parties in the course of their politics, one thing that is constant is that the real members would surely come back to their original political destination.

There are several examples in the country. Nigerians will recall that Mr. Bukola Saraki, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal used to be in the APC. They left the PDP because they were aggrieved and now they have been identified with the PDP and they will be instrumental to the success and return of the PDP to power in 2023.
