The General Overseer of winners chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo recently made a statement in a post about tithing. The post received a lot of mixed reactions from people.
See the post and reactions below.
Based on the topic of tithing I would like to give my opinion.
My opinion about tithing that tithing is not supposed to be a compulsory obligation for Christians and Christians should not be forced to pay tithe.
Tithing was a command under the mosaic laws with the purpose of assisting and supporting the Levites and priest who were working in God's temple.( Numbers 18:21).
The Levites was in need of these special kind of support because they weren't allocated any share of land so they receive the tithes of the other 12 tribes for assisting the priest.
But now giving in Christianity is motivated by law because as a Christian we are bind by the law as Jesus died to abolish the commandments of the law (Ephesians 2:15). Just as we no longer sacrifice Rams and goat s as Christians so we should not be forced to pay tithe.
The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians made known that every giving should be done from a standpoint of love.
2 Corithians 9:7 says " Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
Deuteronomy 15 :10-11 is a a very important biblical passage in the old testament that every Christians should look at.
It says:Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
So I have the opinion that Christians should not have to pay tithe they could rather use the money to bless the poor willingly and not grudgingly.
What is your opinion about this.
