Millers claim that Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya's intentions to suspend all tariffs on imported maize in order to reduce the cost of the staple will only reduce the price of flour by Sh2 for a two-kilo packet.

According to the United Grain Millers Association (UGMA), an umbrella organization of small and medium-sized millers, the move is so tiny that it will hanot affectustomers.

Imported maize costs Sh100 for a 90-kilo bag and a single bag yields 36 packets of two kilos when milled, therefore suspending the taxes will only save Sh2.7.

The government imposes taxes through many agencies, including the Kenya Bureau of Standards' Certificate of Conformity fee, the Kenya Health Inspectorate Service's phytosanitary cost, and the Kenya Revenue Authority's Import Declaration Fee.

"The move is so minor that we need a strong government intervention to make maize available and intoignificantly reduce the cost of flour," UGMA chairman Ken Nyaga said.
