How cancer of the small intestine occurs, the symptoms it presents and how you can prevent it.


The small intestine is a long tube organ that connects the stomach to the large intestine and is part of the gastro intestinal tract of the digestive system where absorption of nutrients and minerals from food takes place.The small intestines can be affected by conditions such as

* Celiac disease which is an autoimmune disease in which a person can't eat gluten,a compound found in wheat because it will affect their intestines.

*Crohn's disease-a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation of the digestive tract.

*Intestinal obstruction-a blockage that keeps food or liquids from passing through your small intestines.

*Irritable bowel syndrome-a condition that affects the digestive causing diarrhoea,bloating, constipation.

Small intestinal cancer can also be called cancer of the cancer of the small bowel.It occurs when healthy cells in the small bowel develop changes in their DNA.

It can occur in different types or forms like

*Adenocarcinoma of the small intestine which begins in the glandular cells lining the small intestine.

*Sarcoma of the small intestine which is a type of tumour that arises from the muscle tissue that make up the intestine.

*Gastro intestinal stromal tumours which is a formation of abnormal cells in the small intestines.

*Small intestine lymphoma starts in the lymph tissue of the small intestine.

Cancer of the small intestines can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain,yellowing of the skin and whites,loss of weight,bloody stool,watery diarrhoea,skin flushing.

Risk factors leading to the disease arising include;

*Gene mutations-inherited Gene mutations that run through families can increase the risk of small intestine cancer.

*Other bowel diseases like Crohn's disease,IBD,Celiac disease.

*A weakened immune system also increases the risk of getting cancer of the small bowel.

The disease can be prevented through drinking alcohol in moderation,stoping smoking,exercising,maintaining a healthy weight,eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.All photos courtesy of Google.
