Robin Gosens, the only player in Germany’s 26-man squad to have never played in the Bundesliga or a product of any of Germany’s famous academies.

On infrequent occasions do we see a well-balanced German national team having positional weak spots on the pitch over the years, but for Löw, the left-back position has been an Achilles’ heel for quite some time now.

The team has struggled to find an ingenious left-back equivalent to what notable player such as Marcel Schmelzer provides.

Joachim Löw has used right-back and even center-backs for makeshifts, most notably in Die Mannschaft’s 2014 World Cup triumph due to the limited options for left-back. For a while, it seemed Germany could not produce one left-back of international quality, then unexpectedly Robin Gosens emerges.

The lack of speed and extra creativity on the left side was a major setback for Die Mannschaft in Russia 2018, but with the creative, shooting, and attacking attributes of the talented left-footed Gosens’, that very factor won’t be at a premium.

Löw described Gosens as “a versatile player whose dynamism, enthusiasm and determination are impressive .

Now, Atalanta’s wing-back has been the rave of the moment for Germany at the current Euro 2021 Championship, with his scintillating display against Portugal in Munich.

Robin Gosens’s Rise

Born in Emmerich am Rhein, Robin Gosens started his football career at the local club of his hometown Fortuna Elten in 2000 when he was just 6 years old. He was considered as a “late-comer” but he stayed there until he was 13 when he went to another local club 1. FC Bocholt for two years and then 3 additional years in the VfL Rhede club. He made his next career leap when he was 18.

Gosens apparently came from nowhere to get to where he’s now, doing excellently well for

Atalanta and Die Mannschaft. The 26-year-old wing-back never played for any of Germany’s youth teams while growing up, compared to other German players who passed through that route for development.

His rise to stardom isn’t really a journey that was set up on a platter of gold, but his rejection from the Rheinland-Pfalz Police unit after failing to meet up with the height requirement.

Following his rejection, Gosens picked up himself by trying football, with his first chances been in the Eredivisie with Vitesse.

He established himself properly as one of the most consistent players in the Netherlands, although not making any serious impact at first, an impressive loan spell at Dutch side

Dordrecht earned him a transfer to Heracles Alelmo in 2015.

Following his wonderful time with the “Heraclieden “, Atalanta secured his services in 2017 and he has since become a revelation, becoming a regular Champions League participant with over 149 matches, 27 goals, and 20 assists.

Prior to becoming a German national team player, Atalanta’s wing-back drew inspiration of playing for Germany from the jersey of Thomas Müller which he hangs on the wall of his room. Interestingly, his dream becomes a reality, featuring in Germany’s triumph over Portugal with Muller playing alongside him.

Gosens light up Euro 2021 off the back of his prolific campaign with The Black and Blues , giving credit to the influence Gian Piero Gasperini has in helping him become the blistering talent.

The wing-back has been able to combine his attacking and defensive abilities to his game all thanks to the tactical approach the manager adopt, which has turned him into an undisputed member of Atalanta FC.

Before now, Gosens may not have been able to turn the heads of top managers in Europe. However, this season he’s been able to do that and likewise stand shoulder to shoulder with other top wing-backs in Europe with his performances for Atalanta defensively and attacking-wise.

From 2018 to 2021, Gosens has been able to rack up double-digit caps for Die Mannschaft with a scintillating display to back it up.

With Germany now in the knockout rounds of Euro 2021, it’s a no-brainer that his value in the transfer market will skyrocket plus the fact that he’s fast becoming the most sought-after wing-back in Europe.
