Teaching is both an art and science. It is the number one multitasking job ever. It is not the desire of everyone to take up teaching as their career. Many people especially those who have not had a real teaching experience before often carry a wrong notion about what it means to be a teacher. The real art of teaching can be attributed to those who are referred to as "born teachers" whereas the "trained teachers" stick strictly to scientific and pedagogical prescriptions without departing.
You may have the desire for teaching either as a career or just as a part-time job. If that is the case, then let me take you through some of the courses that are more education related. Actually, there are university courses which are special education courses that are tailored towards training equipping students to become professional teachers after their successful completion of the course. The best places to get access to these courses are the university of Education Winneba(UEW), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Ghana, Legon and a few others. If you chose to undergo professional training in order for you to take up teaching as a career, then consider enrolling into one of the Colleges of Education in the country.
Now whether you acquire your professional training at the University or College of Education, you need to pursue one of these courses to enable you acquire a professional teacher certificate. The professional teacher courses are the ones with educational components. They include Educational Psychology, Assessment, Curriculum Studies, Educational Statistics, Educational Research, Methodologies Of Teaching, Teaching Practice and many others. For instance, Diploma in Basic Education(DBE), Bachelor of Education, B.Ed, Post Graduate Diploma in Education(PGDE). Until just recently, the colleges of education used to be Diploma awarding institutions. Teachers from College of Education hold a Diploma In Basic Education(DBE). This qualifies them to teach only at the basic school level.
This is why teachers from Colleges are posted to kindergarten, primary or junior high schools. But those from universities can teach in either a basic school or in a senior high school depending on the the program offered. A graduate with a B.Ed Basic Education may not be considered to teach in a senior high school. This is so because, their scope of learning with regards the content knowledge and methodologies are limited to the basic level. Unlike another person who offers for instance, B.Ed Economics, B.Ed Accounting, B.Ed English Language and many others. These are professional education courses which do not limit one to the basic school. This clearly implies that to have a qualification to teach, you need to offer Education related courses.
However, there are also some specific course that will not qualify you as a professional teacher but are relevant in the teaching field. Courses such as Music, Arabic, French, Biochemistry, Computer Science and so many others which are not necessarily education courses but due to their relevant and necessity, they could be given some considerations. Better still, a graduate without any education background can still pursue a Post Graduate Diploma In Education (PGDE) at the University. This will give you a professional teacher qualification with which you can be employed to teach.
Just as everyone will accept it, courses such as Human Resource Management, Public Relations, Communication/Information Studies, Environmental Science, Governance, Management and so many others are non-education courses. You can rarely get a teaching job with this degree especially in the public sector. Even if you are employed to teach with any education background, you'll be categorized as non-professional.
Here below are a tall list of education courses you can offer at the university which will make you a professional and qualified to teach. Study them carefully and make a choice on where your interest and strength lies.
