The Abolongo Correctional Facility Centre in Oyo town, Oyo State was attacked by unknown gunmen on Friday, October 22, 2021.
According to verified reports, the attackers killed a soldier and freed more than 500 inmates in the prison. More than 200 fleeing inmates have been rearrested by security agents so far.
The attack on the prison signalled a new crisis similar to that of the South East in the South West region.
However, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has done some major things after the prison break to prevent future occurrences in the state. They include:
1. A visit to the prison after the incident
Despite the fact that the Correctional Facility is a federal institution, Makinde visited the location after the attack to assess the damage caused by the unknown attackers.
The governor visited the prison on Sunday, October 24, 2021.
The governor appealed for calm from the good people of Oyo State as investigations continue into this incident.
All entry and exit points in the state are being monitored to ensure all escaped prisoners are rearrested and returned to custody, according to the governor.
2. The installation of CCTV in the Abolongo Correctional Facility and other prison yards across Oyo State.
The governor has ordered the installation of CCTV in all prisons in the state to prevent future events.
Makinde also revealed that the CCTV will be connected to the state Security Control Room in Ibadan.
The governor disclosed this in a statement released on this Twitter handle on Sunday afternoon.
