A rubber farmer in Dormaa Central Municipality, Mr. Kwadwo Kyeremeh Stephen who has hectares of rubber plantation in Duasidan near Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono Region of Ghana has today, 7th April, 2021 disclosed to the media that, rubber plantation is far better than cocoa.

According to the farmer, Mr. Kwadwo Kyeremeh Stephen, he visited one of the rubber plantations in Tarkoradi and learnt the farming cultural practices from planting, harvesting and storage.

He then, compared the farming processes of the rubber plants to that of cocoa because he has some hectares of cocoa as well.

He realized the rubber plantation was very simple and lucrative as compared to that of cocoa. He therefore returned to his home community, thus Dormaa to set for land for the rubber plantation.

Mr. Kyeremeh succeeded with some hectares of forest land and started planting the rubber and became the first farmer to introduce rubber plant in Bono Region because many people thought the rubber plant could not thrive well on Bono farm lands.

He told the media that, when he informed some agricultural officers and farmers about the introduction of the rubber plantation in Bono Region, they discouraged him outright that the region produces crops/food stuffs and if farmers engage in the rubber plantation, the region will eventually lack food stuffs.

But he did not consider the hindrances and planted the rubber in quantity of hectares of land and within six years, the plants were matured for tapping for the rubber latex or fluid.

He explained that, the rubber plant is better than cocoa because every month interval, the farmer gets the rubber raw materials for sale while cocoa is not harvested so.

Indeed, the rubber plant matures to produce latex within six years till above forty years before the plant could be felled and processed as timer but cocoa cannot last for such years and cannot be used finally as timber.

In addition, the agricultural cultural practices of rubber plantation is not as hard and huge like cocoa and for that matter, considering many benefits such as prices, harvesting periods, workloads and others in rubber plantation and cocoa, he, Mr. Kyeremeh prefers rubber to cocoa plantations.
