A truck owner with the name, Fatai Salami, has reportedly committed suicide after his truck was seized by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) officials, for flouting COVID-19 guidelines in the state.
Salami reportedly drank Sniper insecticide on the premises of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps after he was reportedly asked to pay the sum of N215,000 for flouting COVID-19 guidelines.
According to a source who spoke with Punch, the TRACE officials seized the truck of the deceased from his driver in Abeokuta on Thursday, for flouting social distancing rule and for not using face mask.
Salami was said to have gone to the premises of TRACE to beg for the release of his truck, all to no avail.
According to the source who spoke with punch, Salami slept on the premises from Thursday until Monday, when he was able to raise the sum of N150,000, which was still rejected.
The source told Punch that Salami threatened to kill himself, but wasn't taken seriously until he eventually drank Sniper and died.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the death of Salami, said that he was neither a truck driver nor a truck owner.
Akinbiyi said that they only saw him in their premises sitting on the floor and was asked to stand up.
He said that as he stood up, her brought out something from his pocket and drank it, it was after he had drank the substance they discovered it was sniper.
