According to the opposition Democratic Alliance, the country's 2021 matric results do not accurately reflect the number of students who failed the country's education system.

Angie Motshekga, the Basic Education Minister, announced on Thursday (20 January) that the pass rate for the 2021 cohort was 76.4 percent. This represents a 0.2 percentage point increase over the 2020 matric pass rate (76.2 percent ).

The DA, on the other hand, claims that the'real' matric pass rate is 51.4 percent, because official results do not account for the high dropout rate. According to the party, the dropout rate for students in grades 10 to 12 this year is 32.7 percent (341,403 students).

Excluding IEB matrices from the grade 10 cohort, the'real' pass rate is slightly higher at 53%.

Mpumalanga, with a dropout rate of 25.5 percent, and the Western Cape, with a dropout rate of 29.7 percent, have the lowest dropout rates. The Northern Cape has the highest rate of learner dropouts, accounting for 44.7 percent of learners enrolled in grade 10 in 2019. (10 297 learners).

"We know that 897,163 students took the exam, but the total number of grade 10 students enrolled in 2019 was 1,045,424" This means that at least 148,261 students dropped out and did not complete matriculation. When we consider the students who took the exam but failed, the actual figure is much higher.

The DA believes this is due to the Department's strict lockdown regulations. For these reasons, the DA is preparing court papers to seek an urgent interdict ordering schools to reopen. This is an irrational and unjustifiable policy."

When statistics on learner dropout rates are considered, the DA claims that South Africa's education system is in crisis.

The Covid regulations for schools have only made matters worse, and the results show that the Minister should scrap the rotational timetable immediately, it said.
